How the unscrambler works

Your letters are checked against the ENABLE word list — the public-domain dictionary of more than 170,000 words that underlies many popular word games. A word matches when it can be spelled using your letters, each used at most once, with ? standing in for any letter exactly like a blank tile. Results are grouped by length, longest first, with Scrabble point values shown so you can spot the strongest plays at a glance. Everything runs in your browser: your letters are never sent anywhere.

Worked example

Type RETAINS and you'll get dozens of words: the full seven-letter words include RETAINS, RETINAS, RETSINA, STAINER, STEARIN, ANESTRI and NASTIER — that group of mutual anagrams is famous among Scrabble players as one of the most flexible racks in the game. Below them come six-letter words like RETAIN, SANTIR and STRAIN, five-letter words like SAINT, RIANT and TRAIN, and so on down to two letters. Add a wildcard — RE?AINS — and the tool tries every letter of the alphabet in that slot, which is exactly how you find the seven-letter "bingo" hiding behind a blank tile.

Getting more from the filters

The filters turn a raw word list into an answer. Playing through an open E on the board? Put E in "contains." Need a word to fit a crossword slot of exactly five letters ending in T? Set "ends with" to T and length to 5. "Starts with" is handy for front hooks — extending a word already on the board by its first letter. Combining your rack plus one board letter and a "contains" filter is the closest thing to a move finder without entering the whole board.

Frequently asked questions

Which dictionary do the results come from?

The ENABLE list (public domain, 172,000+ words). It overlaps heavily with the Scrabble tournament lists, but not perfectly — an occasional word may be valid here and rejected in your game, or the reverse. When it matters, check your game's own dictionary.

How do I enter blank tiles?

Type ? for each blank, up to two. A blank matches any letter, and blanks score zero in Scrabble — the tool still counts the rest of the word's points.

Is using an unscrambler cheating?

Depends on the table. For casual play, learning, or getting unstuck in a solo game, it's a study tool — many strong players use word finders between games to learn new words. In rated or competitive play, it's against the rules. Play fair to your setting.
