How the unscrambler works
Type your letters and the tool checks them against the ENABLE word list, a public-domain dictionary of about 172,000 words that a lot of word games are built on. A word counts if you can spell it from your letters without using any tile twice. A question mark stands in for a blank and matches anything. Results come back grouped by length, longest first, with Scrabble points next to each one. The whole search runs in your browser. Your letters never leave your device.
Worked example
Type RETAINS. You get dozens of words. At the top sit the seven-letter ones: RETAINS, RETINAS, RETSINA, STAINER, STEARIN, ANESTRI and NASTIER. Scrabble players know that group well; it's one of the most flexible racks in the game. Under those come six-letter words like RETAIN and STRAIN, five-letter words like SAINT and TRAIN, and so on down to two letters. Now try RE?AINS. The tool tries all 26 letters in the blank slot, which is how you find the seven-letter play hiding behind a blank tile.
Getting more from the filters
The filters are what turn a long list into an answer. Playing through an open E on the board? Put E in "contains." Need a five-letter word ending in T for a crossword? Set "ends with" to T and length to 5. "Starts with" helps with front hooks, where you extend a word already on the board by adding a letter to its front. Your rack plus one board letter plus a "contains" filter gets you most of the way to a move finder without typing in the whole board.
Frequently asked questions
Which dictionary do the results come from?
The ENABLE list (public domain, 172,000+ words). It overlaps heavily with the Scrabble tournament lists, but not perfectly — an occasional word may be valid here and rejected in your game, or the reverse. When it matters, check your game's own dictionary.
How do I enter blank tiles?
Type ? for each blank, up to two. A blank matches any letter, and blanks score zero in Scrabble — the tool still counts the rest of the word's points.
Is using an unscrambler cheating?
Depends on the table. For casual play, learning, or getting unstuck in a solo game, it's a study tool — many strong players use word finders between games to learn new words. In rated or competitive play, it's against the rules. Play fair to your setting.
